(1823-1894)
She was born to Protestant parents at Bromley St. Leonard's, Middlesex; her father was a partner in an East India mercantile house. At the age of fourteen the family moved to Babbicombe, Devonshire. She converted to Roman Catholicism and entered the Third Order of St. Dominic at Clifton, Bristol, in 1853, taking the name of Sister Francis Raphael. In 1860, at the convent of Stone, Staffordshire, she was appointed mistress of novices, and in 1863, mistress of studies, and prioress in 1872. On the death of Mother Imelda Poole in 1881, she became provincial, thus taking charge of the whole congregation and the convents of Stoke-on-Trent, Bow, and St. Mary Church, a post she held until two weeks before her death. Songs in the Night, and Other Poems, 1876. History of St. Catherine of Siena, 1880. The Spirit of the Dominican Order, 1896. Two of her poems: "Forgotten Among the Lilies," "What the Soul Desires."
